Get Dumb and Get Noticed

By David Tensen · Thursday, April 30th, 2009

How long have you been in your industry or field of expertise?

6 months?

6 years?

Longer? Shorter? Somewhere in between?

Chances are, that you know more than you think you do. Chances are, you are somewhat of an expert or a guru.

I hear you saying, ‘C’mon, that’s bull-dust, I know a lot of people in my industry that know a heck-of-a-lot more than I do. ‘  That may be true, and it may matter to you. But most of the world doesn’t care, and your friends, contacts, clients and database don’t care about that other expert, because they probably don’t even know ‘that industry expert’ that impresses you. They know YOU and want YOU to impress them.

The key to building your profile as an expert is to get a little dumb. Dumb your message down.  Simplifiy it. Take the industry lingo out. Focus on benefits.  AND THEN tell the world.

Ever noticed how much credit is given to people who author books?  Why do we hold them in such esteem?  Because we are looking for leaders, experts and people who will dumb things down for us. Make it real, relevant and accessible.

This is crucial in business if you want to be the ‘go-to-person’ in your field.  There are no better sales leads than  referrals or word of mouth because they come to you with influence and credibility attached.

This is the very reason I blog and get involved in online social media.  Blogging and writing isn’t too hard.  It can take a while to build momentum and consistency but the most important thing is that it allows people into my world of business, web design, marketing and advertising.  And I do my best to dumb it down.

If you regularly read my blog or newsletters, chances are you think I’m an expert in my field. Which is great because I really do know my stuff.  Writing and broadcasting what I know on a regular basis to my database of contact builds great credibility. It places me in the forefront of my readers minds as a person they can access and use when they need a website, promotion and help building their credibility and influence.

So what are you waiting for? The world is looking for leaders and experts in your field. Write, talk, start a blog, newsletter or new media site. Put me on your mailing list too.
